Lime Avenue Football Project - Wisbech
The Lime Avenue Football Project has now been running for over 3 years. It was orignally part of of the BBC Voices project in which Lime Ave was chosen a site where it could be turned in to a better place for local children tfrom the Wisbech North Ward estate to play football.
As a result of the support of the parents and children in the area, there was a Football Foundation application accepted for two pitches with surrounding fences to be created which in which it will enable the children to play in a safer environment, and provide enough money to supply 2 years of free coaching. In this time over 100 children had accessed the project.
In November 2006 the projects funding was coming to an end and with the chance that the project could finish, Cambridgeshire FA acknowledged the success of the project and stepped in and funded from there organisation.
Still going strong after 3 years, there are still around 30 young people which turn up week in week out and even some from when it first orginally started. Some of the older children that have grown up with the project have now become assistant coaches to the head coaches that deliver the sessions.
The support from the parents from the estate has been fantastic in which you will always see a group down there each week supporting the children. Parents were given the opportunity to take there FA Level One Coaching badge in order to support the coaches plus many of the children ended up through the project going on to play for local Junior Clubs in the town.
Every Saturday Morning you will see our staff there providing some fun coaching for the children, where they can win prizes like Player of the Day or a competition which has been contested. It is not unknown if a more experienced player has won an award they will dedicate it to one of the younger players to acknolwedge there efforts instead of accepting the award themselves.
The Lime Avenue Football Project runs every Saturday morning for 2 hours from 10.00am. For further information please contact the FITC office on 01205 364406.
